Rome can get extremely hot and humid in the summertime. Most Romans have houses at the seaside that they escape to and if you have time, you should definitely visit a beach or two near Rome. Here are a few beaches that we recommend visiting:
Santa Marinella
Santa Marinella and Santa Severa are one stop away from each other on the train and they are about a 45 minute trip one way from the city center. We had this location at the top of our list because its a clean beach, the trains are frequent, and its a quick walk from the station. Santa Marinella is a seaside escape town that can get a little crowded in the summer but you usually won’t have a problem finding a bed. There is not really a free beach there so you will have to pay for a bed or a place to lay your towel out but we highly recommend this location. Just watch out for sea urchins!
Santa Severa
This is a great spot because there is a huge castle right on the sea. Its a great place for taking pictures and just relaxing on the beach. If you are taking the train, its about a 15 minute walk from the station to the beach. If you drive, there is a decent sized parking lot next to the beach. The restaurants at the beach are phenomenal as well. You will find some of the best seafood in Lazio in this town along with Santa Marinella.
Nettuno
As you guessed, this town was named after Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. This beach might be a little more difficult to get to but its well worth it. It has a beautiful castle on the beach and you can even snorkel around it. Its about an hour and fifteen minute car ride from the center of Rome and you will need a car so plan accordingly. Well worth the visit!
Ostia
This beach may not be the cleanest beach to visit but it is definitely the easiest to get to via public transportation. In Rome, you can go to the Piramide metro station and catch the Ostia line to go to the beach. If you are standing in front of the Piramide metro, the Ostia train will be on your right side. It takes about 25 minutes to arrive in Ostia and we recommend getting off at the Stella Polare stop. From there its a quick 5 minute walk to the beach and there you will see different beaches that you can relax at. Each beach has its own vibe.
